“What the Dogs Taught Me is an excellent read for any birddog owner, bird hunter, or amateur dog trainer. With his usual humility, and lack of an ‘I know it all’ attitude, Scott Linden presents the reader with a treasure trove of valuable information from training to the field. If you’re serious about your bird hunting, you will benefit greatly from Scott’s insights learned from his years of experience. What the Dogs Taught Me would be a fine addition to the reference library of any bird hunter.”
—Dez Young, host, “Hunting with Hank,” “Upland Days with Dash & Dez”
“Scott’s book What the Dogs Taught Me is a winner! Scott has succeeded in blending anecdotes, training advice, nutrition and health tips with a sincere passion and love for his life with dogs and the outdoors. What the Dogs Taught Me is much more than a reference book. It is a must have for those who train, hunt, and enjoy the marvelous world of hunting dogs.”
– George Hickox, George Hickox Bird Dogs
“This fine, information- and insight-packed book by Scott Linden teaches us all a great lesson: Trust your bird dog. He knows what he’s barking about.”
—Thomas McIntyre, author of The Snow Leopard’s Tale and Shooter’s Bible Guide to Optics
Pay attention to your dog and you’ll become a better hunter. At least I think so! I’ve hunted with hundreds of pointers, flushers and retrievers while making Wingshooting USA and on my own hunting adventures and compiled those observations, suggestions, and advice into a new book called “What the Dogs Taught Me” published by Skyhorse Publishing of New York.
I’m betting those dogs might teach you something too.
If you own a dog, you should own this book. What the Dogs Taught Me offers a lighthearted, welcoming, and practical approach that introduces you to the skills, gear, protocol and “dogology” you’ll need to hone your skills or begin your exploration of the uplands. From gun fit to field etiquette, reading bird cover, and how to interact with dogs, guides, and fellow hunters, you’ll be ready for your first (or your next) bird hunt.
Example topics: How dogs think, how you can better communicate with them, how understanding your dog will make you a better shooter. Training shortcuts and better ways to drill your dog, bird hunting advice. Seasoned uplanders will find insights and semi-secret tips that will make their next trip afield more productive and fun. Beginners will discover insights and observations not contained in other books or videos.
It’s the perfect companion to whatever training book or video you use.
What this book is NOT, is another training workshop full of repetition, rote exercises and boring drills. Most of the ideas are actually better at training dog owners than their dogs! My goal is to shorten your learning curve by two years, turbo-charge you and your dogs’ learning. Think of What the Dogs Taught Me as a season-full of hunting with a good friend who generously shares all his secrets, advice and observations.
If you’ve attended one of my seminars, you’ve had a taste of the subject matter. Forehead-slapping ideas, guides’ tips and unique insights you won’t find in other books or videos. From better shooting to dog training shortcuts … insights into why a dog does what he does, and how to help him help you. Hunting tactics and strategies, and ideas you won’t find in anyone’s books, videos or magazine articles. When you’ve finished the book, you’ll be a better hunter.
Whether you own a Lab, spaniel, or pointing breed, I want to help you become a better bird hunter by reading What the Dogs Taught Me. Whether you’re a seasoned upland veteran or a newcomer, there’s something for you in this concise and useful book.
Also: hundreds of your Facebook and email questions answered in a special section … plus a whole section of insider tips from pro guides and outfitters, the most comprehensive glossary of dog, hunting and training terms in the world, a list of critical outdoor skills you should master, and the most up-to-date version of the Ultimate Upland Checklist too.
PLEASE ALLOW THREE WEEKS FOR DELIVERY
Nice meeting you Scott here at Page Springs today. Have enjoyed some of your videos and writing this afternoon. You are erudite and you make me want a dog again!
Gary and Marilyn
My pleasure, Gary. Safe travels and see you down the road. PS: There are times when I’d gladly give you my dog …
Scott,
I ordered your book after seeing the ad in Pheasants Forever magazine (I’m a Life Member of PF), which indicated you would inscribe copies purchased. I ordered online and requested an inscription for my son who recently got a hunting dog and will be receiving the book for Christmas. I received the book the other day, but there was no inscription. Pretty disappointing.
Tom
Send it back, Tom, and I’ll inscribe it any way you want. There is a space on the order form for personalizing the inscription … nothing there on yours.
Hello, I would like to purchase the book fort husband for Christmas. I clicked on buy now but credit card info would not come up. Would like to use a master card. Will it be possible to receive by Christmas?
We will rush one out. Watch for a PayPal invoice via email.
Hello, I recently had my wish granted and received a copy of your book as a gift. I try and sit down and read as often as I can, how ever with a two year old son and a pup wire hair along with running a small business, I find myself strapped for time. Is there an audiobook available?
Sorry Trevor, no audio book version. E-book yes. I feel your pain. Enjoy the book … when you get a chance!

Scott, i would like to purchase your book…received a promo email but I’ve tried 3 different browsers and none work with the button on the website. I’d like to order a book and have it inscribed if you’re still doing such.

I am also trying to purchase you book for my husband. Please help. Thanks a lot!
I would like to purchase your book having trouble on line please contact me with site to use thanks mark
My daughter bought your book for me for Christmas and my dogs (Setter and Brittany) and I are really enjoying it. I love your show and your writing style. You certainly seem like a guy I’d like to hunt with.
But I agree with Mr. DeSalvo, you scared the bejeebies out of my with your cross eye dominance test. My 50 years plus of trying to hit grouse was (briefly) turned on its ear (or explained).
Thanks for your dedication to our passion.
Glad you like the book. Eye dominance issue fixed for next printing!
Reading your book today reminded me of some basics i had gotten away from. On 121 of my copy you explain how to tell time with the hand under the sun trick but when i turned the page the next topic[taake photos and videos] starts. i went through the book but cant seem to find the rest of the instructions. Good book, watch your show all the time.
Thanks Tom. That passage in the book got lost in the electronic translation, sorta. Read text from the preceding page, then jump to the illustration caption and you’ve got the whole story! Already fixed for the second printing.
I have been on web site and have tried multiple time to order book and nothing happens whats up with that. Just curious .

Hi Scott,
Just ordered your book and put the inscribe in the invoice. Let me know if I need to add it here instead.
Thanks!
Bought the book yesterday at B&N. Great book. Love the Q&A section. I did find one glaring error. On page 34 under “Shoot Better” Scott tells how to tell a shooter which eye is dominant. He has reversed the procedure. If you close your right eye and the object stays over your finger you are left eye dominant.
Good eye Paul.
Maybe that’s because HE is left-eyed dominant? (Watch him shoot and address the camera-interesting)
Scott
Just ordered the book What the Dogs Taught Me through paypal. Would you please sign it as follows: “To Matt & Teddy, May you have many years of happy hunting.”
Scott, just ordered the book and looking forward to reading it! For others ordering, the link from PF didn’t work for me in Chrome for Paypal, but I Googled “what the dogs taught me”. It popped up a result the same site and the Paypal link works just fine (still in Chrome).
And Scott, if it’s possible, could you inscribe mine “To Fart – for teaching Mom how to hunt”
Thanks,
Jenn Mayrand
Interesting name for a dog – I hope it’s a dog! Done and sending today.
Got the book and love it so far! Thanks so much, and yes it’s my stinky GSP – his real name is Bogart.
Glad you like it. Thanks.
Or click on the link on this page. Thanks.
If you just ask Scott for a PayPal invoice, he will send it to you. This book is awesome as I bought for my husband and downloaded it on my IPAD in iTunes.
I hope you are better w/dogs than you are w/computers. I would think from June to Sept. you have gotten the web site straightened out. Larry
Hundreds of others have had no trouble, but a few experience difficulties with Google Chrome. You can try again, use another browser or we will send you a PayPal invoice is you want to buy the book. If you are just being funny – try that again too.
Saw the ad in the Pheasant’s Forever Mag. Tried to order on this site but would not connect. This Sept. are you actually selling this book?
Scott, I don’t see a place for the inscription. If you could, please inscribe “To Jim and Abbycakes, may your days in the field last a lifetime”. Abby is my German Wirehair. She’s the best hunting dog I’ve ever had. Thanks Scott.
Jim May
Done and sent!
Ordered book some time ago. Have you received order? Has book been shipped? Thanks, Rusty Taylor
Rusty (and others) we sold so many, are now awaiting another delivery from the printer. Thanks for your patience.
I would like to order this book for my husband. I tried IE, Firefox and Chrome but was unable to launch the link. How can I order this?
Watch for an email invoice from PayPal, Kim. Thanks for your patience.
How can I order?
Go here: http://www.whatthedogstaughtme.doc and thanks.
Scott,
I just ordered your book but didn’t see the place for a specific inscription. If possible please inscribe “Moose, Rupp and Lexi requested that Janet and Kenny read this book!” Thanks and look forward to reading.
Also, I enjoy your show!
Kenny Daugherty
We’ll take care of it. Thanks for your order.
Scott,
Sorry, but the Buy Now button does not work for me as well. Would like to buy with an inscription “To Remy and Papi, Best of Friends and Happy Hunting”. Please let me know what I need to do.
Just a reminder everyone, if this happens to you, just drop me an email or comment here and we’ll get an invoice out to you via email. Thanks for your patience. (I’m told some browsers don’t really like PayPal … hmmmm).
Like everyone else, I cannot order this book, and would like to get it signed. What hoops do I have to go through?
It has worked for most, Tim but we will send you a PayPal invoice via email. Last hoop. Thanks.
I am trying to order the book but when I click on the paypal button nothing happens. Can you send me a link to order and pay? Thanks
Now it works!
Scott: I bought your book yesterday and want it inscribed:
To Floyd and Gabbi
Happy Hunting
I am having a difficult time trying to buy your book. Can you send me an invoice through PayPal?
Done! Anyone else?
I’m having trouble to; can you get me one?
I ordered your book yesterday and put a note for you to inscribe: To Floyd and Gabbi Happy Hunting
Sent from my iPad
Will do!
I did too. I managed to get into paypal to buy 1 copy but when I go back to order a 2nd book it won’t let me in.
Watch for a PayPal invoice. Thanks for your patience.
I am trying to get a signed copy but when paying it does not have this option.
Nancy, any book ordered at my website is a signed copy. If you want a specific inscription just put it in the box labeled (I think) “Notes to seller.”
I tried to buy your book on this site today, each time I clicked on the “Buy Now” icon it failed to open an information to buy page.
Just an FYI .
Tom
Thanks for the heads-up. This happens with some browsers but not many. You can try again, or email me and I can invoice you via PayPal.
Would like to purchase your book, but don’t want to put my credit card number online. Would perfer to call someone in your organization and give them my card number over the phone. Long Story!!!! Could you send me a contact number to call about ordering your book? Thanks Conni
Conni, you and anyone else who wants to can mail a check for $27.95 (plus the inscription you want) to: Linden Media, Box 8171, Bend OR 97708. Thanks.
