Mondays may not be your favorite day of the week for any number of reasons. That’s why there are so many songs about “blue” ones, “manic” ones, and “stormy” ones. But that’s the likeliest day you are refreshed, reinvigorated and ready to face the work week. And who hasn’t had the opposite: if you worked all weekend, you’re probably not at the top of your game when you clock in on Monday morning.

Well, if it’s true with humans, how about canines?

I need a break too!

My dogs seem to relish a respite but until recently I never gave it much thought. Alright, I might be anthropomorphizing, but being “on-task” every time I appear in the yard, put them on the table, etc., can burn them out just like it can burn us out. (Or maybe it’s just our perception, which becomes reality.)

They need a break from training once in a while. There’s only so much of their undivided attention I can expect.  So I give them a “weekend” too.  Have you ever sent your dog to Jamaica – or Disneyland – so to speak?

Some days, we just play. Explore new places. Or hunt. Or go back to the easy stuff on the training agenda. Or practice old skills in new places. What we don’t do is focus on mastering new skills.

We let the newest bits of knowledge “sink in,” without burning them out or boring them. Buddy, Manny and their handler enjoy a no-stress holiday that makes the next intense training more productive.

It’s kinda like when we put on our sweatpants and watch football all day. We still know where the fridge is and how to open it, but it’s second nature and doesn’t require much concentration … until we can’t figure out where our wife hid the beer!

(Don’t forget to watch the new HOT SHOT video, take the trivia quiz and you might win a prize.)
