Buddy: I resolve to help The Boss finish Manny’s training so they can take a Utility Test. I will teach him to honor my points, and if he gets there first, I will honor his. I resolve to make room on the couch for all the humans. And be nice to that little Corgi that came home with Mommy a while ago.
Manny: I resolve to whine less when Uncle Buddy gets to hunt first. I’m going to be a big boy this year, I promise. I will learn to jump into the box in the back of the truck, and to stay still until The Boss says “fetch,” too.
Scott: I resolve to take another shooting lesson so my dogs have something to fetch. And to be understanding as Buddy ages. I resolve to help Manny reach his full potential, despite my own shortcomings as a trainer.
You:
Scott,
What is best way to have one’s dog retrieve a pheasant? I have a German shorthair and she will only bring it to me when she feels like it. Please let me know how to get her to fetch the dead bird and bring it back to me every time? I have purchased one of your fetching dummies. I am waiting on its arrival.
What is the oldest dog you have ever hunted with? I would love to hunt with both of my dogs but my oldest dog is 10. She is an avid retriever and would most likely solve my problem. Another issue how does one get the old dog out from under mama’s eyes? She has become her baby since she turned 8.
How did you manage to get 2 great dogs and have your wife agree? I would love to get another upland hunting dog to replace my 10 yr old that became mama’s girls. I am looking at a brittany. Please advise me with your thoughts.
Hey Bond,
1) Force training is the only way to ensure your dog brings anything back most of the time.
2) I’ve hunted with a 17-year-old German Longhair. It might be time for your old dog to become a mama’s girl, retiring from the hunting world for the next phase of life as a companion for your wife.
3) It took years to wheedle another dog into the house. Start now, be persistent, and good luck.
