As the movie trailer says, it’s baaaaack!
The Awesome Upland Road Trip, version 2.0, is on the books and in the calendar. And this year, it’s a radio and TV venture. My crew and I will venture east from Central Oregon a number of times, in pursuit of everything from Huns to chukars, ringnecks to sharpies. The results – good, bad, and ugly – will find a home on radio broadcasts this season, and on my television series Wingshooting USA next fall.
Here’s where you come in: there are a few holes in the schedule and I could use your suggestions. Much as I hate to say it, tell me where to go. Anywhere west of the Mississippi is fair game, so start your thinking. Maybe it’s a place you’ve always wanted to hunt … we could do the field research. Or, it’s a honey hole you think everyone should hunt once before they die … go ahead and share it. Do you have memories of a friendly town, helpful lodge owner, or must-see stopover?
Whatever the idea, wherever the place, I’m open. And it won’t be without reward. Thanks to sponsor Irish Setter boots, one reader will be drawn at random from all the comments/suggestions and I’ll send you a free pair of hunting boots.
We start in September. When we’ll end is anybody’s guess … maybe yours? Win your boots below.
Scott,
I would love to see you take on the Ptarmigan in Colorado. I have yet to do the adventure myself and would like to see how you fare. Good Luck, great show.
Steve
Now THAT’s a rare bird for the lower 48. I’ll add it to my list (also on the list is Himalayan snowcock – huntable population in Nevada but the hunt starts at 10,000 feet!).
If you are truely interested in NW Iowa I could talk to my buddies up there. We go up to the Anthon area (about 30 mi from Souix City) every year where one of our gang lines up more land than we can cover in the week we area there. All private land.
Usually the hunting is very good although last year there were too many crops still in the field. We always go around the second week of Iowa season so we can honor the Viet Nam Vet in the group on Veteran’s Day.
Just let me know and I can inquire.
I may get there yet this year. What a great hunt/Veteran’s Day idea. Thanks.
Scott,
It was a pleasure to have the chance to meet and talk with you at my booth at Pheasant Fest 2010 in Des Moines. I hope that you find my Quick Reference Upland Game Bird Guide for the Rocky Mountain & Great Plains states interesting and informative. I have hunted many species in these areas, but have not had the opportunity to hunt white-tailed Ptarmigan in Utah or Colorado and the elusive Himalayan Snowcock/Partridge in the Ruby and E. Humbolt Mountains outside of Elko, Nevada. If you are interested in either of these trips let me know. Right now I’m scheduled to hunt Ptarmigan with Dez Young in Alaska in mid-August, three species of desert quail in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona in December ending that trip in western Oregon to hunt Mountain Quail. I’m open between and after the last trip.
Regards,
“Pheasant John”
Scott,
I’m hoping to see some hunts in Montana and North Dakota.
A buddy and I are planning a trip out west as soon as the Michigan grouse population starts to cycle down. We’re hoping to find an area with a good mix of species.
We will be spending 2 weeks this fall hunting the Michigan LP and UP. As we have previously discussed I will forward you pictures and results.
Good luck and looking forward to seeing your Wirehair work.
Have a good trip John. We are stopping twice in Montana, and once in North Dakota if all goes according to plan. Should help you with next year’s planning. N. Dakota in particular might be interesting for you as we hope to fly ringnecks and prairie chickens, possibly a sharpie or two.
You and Buddy need to come out to High Desert Hunt club, I know the word is the club folded but needless to say we are here still, Management has changed but the pristine and the beauty of the club has not, it’s only got better. Tejon Ranch will always be here and hopefully so will HDHC. Look us up we would love for you and Buddy to come back out!!
Pheasant hunting in Iowa is an idea I would throw out. The hunting in the Northwest corner has been better than the rest of the state recently and it helps save on some of your travel. I could try and find some spots or give you some contacts if you need them.
Another idea would be to hunt Ruffed Grouse in Minnesota. Great bird hunting, but very tough to film though.
Thanks PNB … we are looking at Iowa right now! Specific ideas are welcome; you know how to reach me. See my comments re: ruffs, above.
We need you to come to eastern colorado (Yuma county) and help get the word out. There is good pheasant hunting out here but we never get any love. This year is shaping up to be the best season in memory due to all the moisture. I have plenty of private if your interesed.
