My Irish Setter boots are broken-in, the Tri-Tronics Upland Sport G3 collar is charged and ready, and Buddy is in shape for warm weather and skittish birds. The jury’s still out on whether I’m ready for the bushwhacking we will attempt Monday.
We’re starting in northeast Oregon on a trickle of a stream where I was chased off my fly fishing years ago by a momma ruffed grouse guarding her brood. When I next visited, it was with pro guide Ed Hall, and we were carrying shotguns, not fly rods. I wonder if we shot any of her progeny?
Stand by for news from the field … If I survive! Meanwhile, in the comments section below tell me where you’re hunting in your Irish Setter boots. I’ll pick one person per week from here and our radio show callers, who will win a new pair of Irish Setter boots or a new Irish Setter hunting coat.
Scott (& Buddy)
well as the of the 13th of oct. here in the great state of IOWA, will be the start of fall turkey hunting . so that’s were i will be starting my hunting venture . here in delaware co. iowa . which is in the east central part of the state. and the leaves here are really changing into there fall colors . it truely is a great time of the year . thanks again tim g. and good luck on your trip .
Just barely needed a work-in; I’m impressed so far. A chukar hunt will be the true test of the new DSS sole – distributes impact from every heel strike. On the lava rock, that will be MOST appreciated.
PS: You’re now entered in the random drawing.
Scott: good to see you almost on the road. I’m surprised your Irish Setters needed much breaking in at all. I’ve owned several pairs of Setter boots and have loved them all. Currently I have two pairs of 855s — the side-zip upland boot — one pair is about three years old and has had one resole already, the other pair are maybe a year old but are my ‘good’ boots. I use the old ones for training days, hunt tests, and field trials — the new ones are reserved for actual hunting. We live in downstate NY, and the old boots are already scheduled to make appearances in MA, CT, NJ, and VA. For now, the new boots will get most of their use in NY — but they’ll get re-proofed in preparation for what should be a glorious trip for ruffed grouse in ME.
I’ve tried other boots, but always come back my Irish Setters.
best of luck
Andrew
