Picture it..

It's Wednesday, there is two inches of snow already down and it continues to fall. You drive by countless numbers cows, their black sillhouettes dusted with white stuff. They stare back at you as you laugh, giddy with anticipation.

You pull up to one of the countless public hunting areas in South Dakota, 500 acres with no other hunters in sight.

You try to quietly throw your shoulder against the old noisy door trying not to spook everything within the first half-mile.

You swing your shabby boots out of the truck, thinking next year I'll put down the cash for some decent Irish Setters.

You only walk a few feet before you cross the first set of pheasant tracks. You suddenly feel a lot warmer as you follow them, watching every blade of grass swaying from the light wind.

The anticipation of a dozen flushing roosters fills your mind when you hear a noise to your right...... you shake your head, when you realize it's just a cattail brushing against your coat.

I've got a gun, a dog, a crappy old pick-up, and a South Dakota trip planned...I'm only missing one thing...a decent pair of boots... Take care and good hunting...

I do most of my quail hunting in McCain Valley in San Diego county. It's a semi desert environment east of the Laguna mountains. The quail seem to do well out there, especially in the years when we get a lot of rain. There are lots of rabbits and coyotes out there also. I've even seen mountain lion tracks out there. I'ts a bit of a drive to get there, but it's usually worth it. I've put so many miles on my current boots that there's not much left of the soles. A new pair of boots would be a great way to get quail season started!

Thanks,

Scott-
I can't think of a better place than the rough terrain of zone D-13 in Southern California. I was able to take my first buck ever this year. I wore a pair of hand-me-downs while hunting in A Zone. There was not much hiking, so they were a non-factor. I will be attempting to get a second buck this year and will be doing some serious hiking in D-13. I am not quite sure if teh old boots will cut it. My hunting buddy swears by Irish Setters. He told me that when I get a new pair of boots, I need to get a pair of Irish Setters. I have done some research and found that here are several types of Setters that would fit my needs. Unfortunately, they are out of the old price range, thus my attempt to win a pair. Good luck everyone!

Thanks-

My husband has asked me to accompany him on an upland hunt this year with our two pointing labradors. This will be my very first hunting experience and I have been researching hunting boots for women. I came across your website while looking at possible blast/cast locations and thought I would send you my comment entry.

I read the description of the Irish Setter Wingshooter DSS Viper boot and thought it looked like a very nice overall boot. The 'good snake boot' description kind of 'wigged' me out, but hey, best to have a great boot then, right?

I could not find a similar women's boot by Irish Setter, do they have good hunting boots for women? My Timberland hiking boots will probably not cut it, so I will need something appropriate.

Needless to say, I don't have an upland bird hunting jacket either.

I would be happy to wear both or either in my first upland bird hunt. Wish me luck!

Thank you - Barbara Peterson

California ... spot and stalk with a ton of glassing the hillsides and trying to get in position with a bow.

Chasing deer and hogs through the hills and scrub requires a lot of walking and attention ... sore feet are the last thing you'll want to think about or, worse yet, be distracted by!

The Shadow Trek series seems ideal ... the GTX 8" for summer/early fall hunts and and the taller Viper series for wet location and heavy snake areas.

Here in California the hog season is year-round (most locations) so we're chasing them in every thing from hot summer days through the hills and valleys to snowy scrub-covered acres and through the muddy draws in the transition times.
